Quick Answer

To upgrade a weapon in Mina the Hollower, obtain another copy of the same weapon. You can buy weapon copies from Legovich’s Arms in Ossex or find them in red weapon chests. Each weapon can be upgraded twice.

How Weapon Upgrades Work

Mina does not use a traditional material-based upgrade menu. Weapon upgrades happen when you obtain another copy of a weapon you already own.

First copy unlocks the weapon. Second copy upgrades it. Third copy upgrades it again.

Main Weapons

The main weapons include:

  • Blaststrike Maul
  • Nightstar
  • Whisper and Vesper
  • Battery Buster
  • Guardian Casket

You choose one of the first three at the start, but the others can be obtained later. Your starting choice does not permanently lock you out of the full weapon set.

Where to Upgrade First

Your first reliable upgrade source is Legovich’s Arms in Ossex City Center. This blacksmith shop sells weapon copies. If you buy a copy of a weapon you already own, it upgrades that weapon.

This is the most predictable early upgrade method because it does not require secret hunting.

Red Weapon Chests

Red chests are special weapon chests. They can contain weapons or upgrades. If the chest gives a weapon you already have, it becomes an upgrade.

Check red chests near:

  • Side routes
  • Locked doors
  • Boss-adjacent areas
  • Elevated ledges
  • Suspicious dead ends
  • Breakable walls
  • Backtracking paths

If you can see a red chest but cannot reach it, look for another route from a nearby room.

Should You Buy or Find Upgrades?

Use both methods. Buying is faster. Red chests save Bones and reward exploration.

A strong first-run plan:

  1. Upgrade your main weapon once at Legovich’s Arms.
  2. Explore naturally and open red weapon chests.
  3. Buy another upgrade when enemies feel too durable.
  4. Save some Bones for Trinket Bags and map upgrades.

Which Weapon Should You Upgrade First?

Upgrade the weapon you use most, not the one that sounds strongest.

Nightstar is safe and beginner-friendly because of reach. Blaststrike Maul rewards strong timing. Whisper and Vesper are fast but require close-range confidence. Battery Buster is more technical. Guardian Casket is better for defensive players.

If you are unsure, upgrade the weapon that gets you hit the least.

Common Upgrade Mistakes

Avoid these:

  • Upgrading weapons you never use.
  • Spending all Bones on weapons before buying Trinket Bags.
  • Ignoring red weapon chests.
  • Chasing damage instead of comfort.
  • Trying to max every weapon too early.

Weapon upgrades matter, but Mina becomes stronger through balanced progression: weapons, Trinkets, Sidearms, map tools, and survival.
